AH&LA STATEMENT ON HOTEL ROOM KEY SECURITY
Like every business in which the public is served, the lodging industry views guest safety as a top priority. Corporations, franchisors, and management companies all have strong and comprehensive guest security policies and procedures, as do individually-owned and operated properties. This includes strict policies for issuing guestroom key cards to hotel customers.
While the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) does not set security standards, it encourages lodging properties to continually evaluate and enforce existing security policies and practices to ensure all staff members are following protocol.
The Educational Institute (EI), a subsidiary of AH&LA, offers many educational and training programs/resources for hoteliers to train staff on effective policies when issuing guestroom key cards. In particular, EI offers the following resources specifically covering this issue:
