AH&LA STATEMENT ON SWINE INFLUENZA

In light of the current threat of swine influenza around the world and in certain U.S. areas, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) is urging the industry to ensure a high level of sanitation at all times in order to minimize the possible outbreak or spread of infection.  AH&LA encourages hoteliers to stay informed and to develop strategies and precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of employees and guests.  As during previous health scares, it's important to "be prepared, but not panicked."

To minimize transmission of this, and any disease, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends frequent hand washing, minimized touching of one's nose and mouth, and immediately discarding any tissues used for coughing.  Employees who exhibit flu symptoms should not report to work and stay home, minimizing contact with others.  If flu symptoms persist or worsen, medical treatment should be sought.

As of April 30, there have been no reported cases of swine influenza found in U.S. hotels.  Should this occur, plans from the federal and state health officials to immediately contain and treat the individuals afflicted by this influenza strain will be implemented.  Americans should remain alert to the symptoms of the flu but should realize that health officials are taking all necessary steps to help treat those individuals and contain the disease before it spreads.

AH&LA is providing online resources to assist the industry as well as serving as a conduit for information and advice from government and experts on this public health crisis.  Click here to visit the AH&LA Swine Flu Information page.
