Backgrounder - Educational Institute
The Educational Institute (EI) is a non-profit educational foundation that has been teaching, training and certifying leaders in the hospitality industry for 50 years. The Institute is an affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), the trade association representing the $103.6 billion lodging industry in the United States.
EI was founded in 1953 with the mission of developing formalized training for the hospitality industry. The Institute developed the first home-study curriculum for mid-level managers in hotels, and has since expanded to provide a variety of products and services to prepare individuals for every phase of their hospitality career.
In April 2002, EI was consolidated with the American Hotel & Lodging Foundation, (the research and dollar-dispensing arm of AH&LA) to form the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation. As a developer and distributor of training and educational resources, the Educational Institute will continue to operate under the "brand" name of "EI."
Industry and Allied Programs
EI's mission is to be the premier source for quality hospitality education, training, and professional certification to meet the needs and help advance the excellence of hospitality schools and industries. To accomplish this mission, EI has developed an extensive line of training videos, CD-ROMs, textbooks, and seminars as well as certification programs for hospitality professionals from line-level employees to department heads and general managers.
Certification from EI is recognized and respected throughout the hospitality industry. Many EI resources are available in languages other than English, and the company also offers a full line of language-free, line-level training videos. EI also offers online training through its CourseLine® electronic delivery system.
Today, EI is the most recognized provider of training solutions for the industry and works with hotel management companies, major chains, individual hotels, sporting and gaming clubs, casinos, cruise ships, restaurants, and all branches of the U.S. military to develop programs for consistent corporate-wide or organization-wide training. Nearly 100 licensed EI affiliates in 40 countries serve the needs of learning institutions and hotel organizations worldwide.
EI's board of trustees includes the presidents of top hospitality corporations as well as educators from the finest schools and universities. These leaders help define EI's focus ensuring that practical, up-to-date resources continue to address the hospitality industry's fast-changing operational and human resources needs.
Academic Programs
EI publishes hospitality management textbooks and courses that are used in more than 1,400 universities, colleges, vocational/technical institutes and high school throughout the world.
EI's courses are developed with input from hospitality industry professionals and reflect the most current industry practices and trends. Supplemental materials from EI - including videotapes, CD-ROMs, and case studies - show students how to apply the concepts they learn in the classroom. Students who complete courses offered by EI earn certificates from AH&LA that are recognized and respected worldwide. The Institute offers certificates of management and diplomas in areas including in-rooms division, food and beverage, human resources, marketing and sales, accounting and financial, international hotel, and hospitality management.
In addition, individuals already employed in the hospitality industry can increase their knowledge and prepare for career advancement by enrolling in EI's distance learning courses. Using the same course materials found at universities, distance-learning students work independently to earn certificates and diplomas from AH&LA. Groups of hotels can affiliate as EI Chapters to offer their employees the opportunity to take distance-learning courses at a reduced cost.

EI works closely with several hospitality organizations to provide information for professional certification programs, customize existing Institute training programs, develop new resources, and participate in conferences that advance the cause of the hospitality industry. These organizations include:
