Austin, Texas – April 12, 2017 – Returning for his second “Heart of the House” tour hosted by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, Congressman John Carter (R-TX-31) visited the Austin Marriott North today to tour the property, meet with hotel employees and learn more about the public policy issues that matter most to the hotel industry. In its fourth year, the “Heart of the House” tour program links hotels across the United States with members of Congress from their districts to discuss how the industry provides a pathway for upward mobility, offers long-term career opportunities, and contributes to the local community.

Texas hotels generate nearly $13.6 billion dollars in tax revenue and play a vital role in strengthening the state’s economy. As a popular tourist destination, the Lone Star State provides more than 633,000 hospitality jobs and generates some $94 billion in business sales. “America has one of the strongest economies in the world, and Texas has one of the strongest economies across our great nation. I am committed to ensuring that we maintain and improve on these strengths by supporting an entrepreneurial spirit in Congress,” said Congressman John Carter. “It’s great to see firsthand the opportunities hotels like the Marriott Austin North offer to provide lifelong hospitality careers through fast-track promotions, and training resources. This industry not only brings numerous jobs for local hardworking Central Texans, but also boosts our economy and overall community development.”

Today’s tour was led by Marriott Austin North’s General Manager, Melissa Garrett, and was accompanied by AHLA’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, Vanessa Sinders, and Texas Hotel & Lodging Association’s Justin Bragiel.

Following the tour, Congressman Carter participated in a roundtable discussion with participant hotels across the area on issues facing the industry including travel and tourism, healthcare, and the rise of commercial activity from short-term rentals.

“It was an honor to welcome Congressman Carter to the Marriott Austin North and introduce him to so many of our fantastic associates who work hard day in and day out to serve our guests and ensure our business model is a home away from home,” said General Manager Melissa Garrett. “Hospitality is the heart of this industry and we pride ourselves on securing the best talent while continuing to contribute to our local community.”
