Rep. Cohen Tours Historic Peabody Memphis; Tennessee Hotels Provide More Than 150,000 Jobs

Memphis, Tennessee – (May 11, 2017) – U.S. Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN) toured the Peabody Memphis today to meet with employees and see firsthand how this landmark hotel continues to play an integral role in the community after its doors opened almost 150 years ago. The tour is part of the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AHLA) “Heart of the House” hotel tour program, which connects members of Congress with local hoteliers and employees in their congressional district to allow congressional leaders the opportunity to hear from hotel associates and discuss about the industry’s impact to the local community.

Tennessee hotels are an integral part of the fabric of communities across the state. As a vibrant tourism destination, the Tennessee hotel industry is an economic driver, providing more than 156,000 hospitality jobs, generating over $18 billion in business sales, and contributing nearly $10 billion to the state economy. With 28 million guest rooms occupied each year across the Volunteer State, hotel guests spend some $8 billion at local businesses, which goes directly back into the economy. “It was a pleasure to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Peabody and have the opportunity to meet many of the hardworking individuals who maintain the character and traditions of such a historic landmark. The city of Memphis has such rich culture of Blues and barbeque, and the staff at the Peabody are on the front lines of welcoming guests and locals alike to this great city and what we have to offer,” said Congressman Cohen.  “After meeting so many employees and hearing their stories of upward mobility and job opportunities, it’s great to see what tools and resources are available for employees to rise through the ranks and establish long-term careers.”

Today’s tour was hosted and led by the President of Peabody Hotels, Doug Browne, and was accompanied by AHLA’s Manager of Political and Government Affairs, Jaymie Best, the CEO of the Memphis Hotel & Lodging Association, Wayne Tabor, and the Tennessee Hospitality and Tourism Association’s Director of Business and Membership Development, Lisa Bass.

“It was an honor to welcome Representative Cohen to the Peabody Memphis and allow him to see the tireless dedication of our staff to ensure we preserve the long-standing traditions of our legendary hotel,” said President of Peabody Hotels, Doug Browne. “We’ve made great strides to highlight the charm and elegance of the Peabody Memphis to enhance the guest experience and showcase the rich culture, musical heritage and unique flare of this city. We couldn’t do it without the hotel’s devoted associates, many of whom have worked here for decades. Hospitality and customer service is at the core of our industry, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support and partnership with the greater Memphis community.”
