The hotel industry has a longstanding commitment to reducing their carbon footprints and giving guests innovative and sustainable experiences and events. Through our combined sustainability efforts — from energy-efficient lighting, smarter climate controls, water conservation, food and plastic waste reduction, and other operational improvements — America’s hotels are making strides to significantly reduce their carbon footprints, with many working toward a net zero future.
Our Position
AHLA advocates for policies at the state and local level that empower hotel owners and operators to improve operational efficiencies and reduce their emissions and energy use. AHLA works with state and local officials on a variety of tax credits, incentives, and rebates that help owners and operators achieve improved energy efficiency and reduced emissions as well as providing education on the industry’s existing practices and commitments. The hotel industry is committed to working with policymakers on the importance, promise, and results of sustainability practices that are necessary and vital to reaching our shared sustainability goals.
Building Performance Standards (BPS)
AHLA recommends three core principles for building performance standards:
Implementation of science-based, data-driven standards supported by thorough analysis of grid resilience and consideration of hotel property energy usage, including challenges faced by historic properties and distinct characteristics of hotel chain scale.
Standardization of requirements across different jurisdictions to simplify compliance, including using landmark federal programs as a uniform means for compliance; and
The provision of clear compliance guidelines and fair remedies, including technical assistance and incentive programs.
The industry supports the Real Estate Roundtable's policy guidelines for building performance standards, emphasizing practical implementation and reasonable compliance pathways.
