State-by-State Hotel Revenue, Tax and Job Loss

February 1, 2022
Summary The hotel industry continues its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a total loss of $111.8 billion in room revenue and significant job and tax revenue declines nationwide. Despite signs of partial recovery in 2022, hotels remain below pre-pandemic revenue levels, with business travel, meetings, and events still lagging. Many properties relied on reserves during the downturn, and the industry faces challenges in fully rehiring staff, paying back lenders, and investing in property improvements. Notably, states like New York, California, Nevada, and Virginia experienced the highest revenue and job losses, with overall employment down -22.8%.
